Description
As part of The Loft Cinema’s mission to build community through the love of film, the Animation Station summer program aims to provide Tucson’s young artists with an opportunity to get a behind-the-scenes look at how movies are made. The students in the program will work with certified educators and UA film school graduates to practice collaboration skills and progression through a creative process. Instructors from The Loft’s talented staff will guide participants through the terminology, craft, and steps required to turn their ideas into animation!
Goals
Students who complete this workshop will be able to:
- Create an animated short film with a runtime of 1-5 minutes
- Screen their film at The Loft Cinema
- Develop basic filmmaking skills, such as writing, lighting, sound recording, and set building
- Collaborate with a small group of peers on a shared vision
- Manage project tasks within a two-week period
- Present their work to an audience
- Evaluate the overall experience of filmmaking

- Tascam/Sound Recorder
- Lamps/lighting kit
- Playdoh
- Legos/toys/action figures
- Construction paper
- Pipe cleaners
- Googly eyes
- Crepe paper
- Glue sticks
- Markers
- Boxes/Cardboard
Group Size & Age Range
A total of 24 students will be divided into two age groups – the first group will include children from the ages of 8-12 years and the second group will include adolescents from the ages of 13-16 years. Each age group will be further divided into small groups of six for their project.
Time
- 9:00 AM – 3:00 PM with a 45 minute lunch break (Lunch will be provided each day of the program)
Overview of Workshop
Week 1
- July 1: introductions; presentation of genres; brainstorming; writing
- July 2-3: writing; set building; preparing to shoot
- July 4: CLOSED FOR HOLIDAY
- July 5: catching up; storyboarding
Week 2
- July 6-7: instructors model how to use equipment; begin to shoot
- July 8-9: shooting, lighting, sound recording
- July 10: completing projects
