The Films of Alfonso Cuarón

Born in Mexico City in 1961, Alfonso Cuarón studied cinema and philosophy before shooting his critically acclaimed first film, the sexy satire Sólo con tu pareja, in 1991. A smash hit in his native Mexico and beyond (although never released theatrically in the U.S.), the film catapulted the young director into his first pair of Hollywood features, both literary adaptations: 1995’s Oscar-nominated A Little Princess, based on the classic young adult novel by Frances Hodgson Burnett; and a modernized version of Charles Dickens’ Great Expectations, starring Ethan Hawke and Gwyneth Paltrow, in 1998.

“I’m interested in new worlds, new universes, new challenges. I always said the only reason to make a film is not for the result, but for what you learn for the next one.” – Alfonso Cuarón

Upon returning to Mexico, he directed, co-wrote and produced the raunchy comedy/drama Y tu mamá también (2001), starring Gael Garcia Bernal and Diego Luna, which became an arthouse smash, garnering Cuarón an Oscar-nomination for Best Original Screenplay. The globetrotting filmmaker next ventured to England, where he helmed the celebrated third entry in the popular Harry Potter series, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, in 2004, and directed and co-wrote the Oscar-nominated dystopian sci-fi film, Children of Men, in 2006. Returning to Hollywood for the blockbuster 2013 outer space thriller, Gravity, starring Sandra Bullock, Cuarón received the Best Director Academy Award for the film, securing his position as one of the world’s top directors.  In 2018, Cuarón returned to his roots in Mexico for his most personal work to date, the semi-autobiographical drama, Roma, a stunning look at family life in Mexico City during the 1970s. This December, in honor of the release of Roma, The Loft Cinema is proud to present a selection of the films of Alfonso Cuarón on the big screen!
