Summer Camp presents: The Films of Cher!
Born Cherilyn Sarkisian in California in 1946, Cher’s other well-known nickname is the “Goddess of Pop.” A true renaissance woman with a flair for the fabulous, the one-name icon’s massive resume includes television shows, feature films, Broadway plays, pop songs, multi-year residencies at Las Vegas resorts, world concert tours, fashion trends, four comebacks (and counting!), and advocacy for LGBTQ rights and HIV/AIDS prevention and treatment.
“Until you’re ready to look foolish, you’ll never have the possibility of being great.” – Cher
Cher has been an international superstar even since her debut on the pop charts with her then-partner Sonny Bono in the 1960s. She entertained, but she also radiated unmatched charisma, humor and talent. Fast-forward to today, and she has a Grammy, an Emmy, three Golden Globes, and an Oscar to go along with at least one number one hit single on Billboard’s pop chart in each of the past six decades. And through it all, she has managed to light up the big screen and forge a career as one of Hollywood’s most chameleonic and selective superstars. Mid-stream on a successful music and TV variety show run in the early ‘80s, Cher suddenly became a sought-after dramatic actress with understated screen energy to burn after her turn in Robert Altman’s Come Back to the 5 and Dime, Jimmy Dean, Jimmy Dean (1982). Then came a blistering, award-winning run through the rest of the decade, during which she worked with some of the greatest directors of the era on films such as Silkwood, Mask, The Witches of Eastwick, Suspect, and Moonstruck, for which she took home the Academy Award for Best Actress. Even after ramping back up her recording career in 1989, Cher continued to act in celebrated films such as Mermaids, before stepping away from feature films from 1999 until her return in the glitzy backstage musical Burlesque in 2010. To celebrate the 2019 “Cher-aissance” (which encompasses the current hit Broadway musical, The Cher Show, a best-selling album of Abba covers and a new world tour), every Thursday night in June, The Loft Cinema presents some of the most fiercely fabulous films featuring Cher on the big screen! PLUS, sing-a-long with rockin’ Cher music videos before each movie – yes, we call it “Cher-aoke!”
