Meet Tucson’s own Cord Jefferson, winner of the 2024 Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay, at a very special screening of his debut feature, American Fiction! The acclaimed writer/director will appear at a post-film Q&A on the Loft Cinema stage!

This event was made possible thanks to the support of Mia Farrell, Director of the Hanson FilmTV Institute, and Stephanie Troutman-Robbins, Department Head of Gender & Women’s Studies at the University of Arizona and co-chair of The Loft Cinema’s racial justice committee!

American Fiction is Cord Jefferson’s hilarious directorial debut, which confronts our culture’s obsession with reducing people to outrageous stereotypes. Jeffrey Wright stars as Monk, a frustrated novelist who’s fed up with the establishment profiting from “Black” entertainment that relies on tired and offensive tropes. To prove his point, Monk uses a pen name to write an outlandish “Black” book of his own, a book that propels him to the heart of hypocrisy and the madness he claims to disdain.  Nominated for five Academy Awards including Best Picture, Best Actor (Jeffrey Wright), Best Supporting Actor (Sterling K. Brown), Best Original Score (Laura Karpman) and winner of Best Adapted Screenplay (Cord Jefferson), American Fiction also stars Tracee Ellis Ross, Issa Rae, Leslie Uggams and John Ortiz. (Dir. by Cord Jefferson, 2023, USA, 117 mins., Rated R)

Tucson native and Canyon Del Oro graduate Cord Jefferson is an acclaimed writer, director, journalist and essayist. His television writing credits include Master of None, The Good Place, Succession and Watchmen, for which he received the 2020 Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Writing for a Limited Series of Movie.  For American Fiction, his 2023 feature film directorial debut, he has received numerous honors, including an Academy Award, a BAFTA Award and a Writers Guild of America Award for Best Adapted Screenplay.
