In this poignant and humorous love story, often considered one of the grandest, most iconic romances in movie history, Cary Grant and Deborah Kerr fall head over heels and demonstrate why they remain one of Hollywood’s greatest onscreen couples. In An Affair to Remember, a glossy, big-budget remake of the 1939 comedy/drama Love Affair (with both films sharing the distinction of being directed by the same filmmaker, Leo McCarey), Grant plays Nickie Ferrante, a well-known international playboy who meets Kerr’s lonely traveler, Terry McKay, aboard a transatlantic ocean liner en route from Europe to New York. Sparks fly, romance blooms, and the two fall deeply in love. Unfortunately, each is unhappily engaged to someone else. Undeterred, the pair agree to meet six months later atop the Empire State Building if they still feel the same way about each other. But tragedy threatens their rendezvous, and the lovers’ future takes an emotional and uncertain turn. Nominated for four Academy Awards, and years later serving as the inspiration for Nora Ephron’s smash-hit 1993 romantic comedy Sleepless in Seattle starring Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan, An Affair to Remember is a Hollywood romance you’ll never forget. (Dir. by Leo McCarey, 1957, USA, 115 mins., Not Rated)
