Ash Is Purest White, the latest from acclaimed Chinese director Zhangke Jia (A Touch of Sin), is an epic saga of a woman whose knack for crime carries her through a rapidly changing China over the course of two decades.

“A twisting tale of love and survival in 21st century China.” – Maggie Lee, Variety

Set in China’s jianghu criminal underworld, this story of violent love and betrayal is told in three sections, with events unfolding in 2001, 2006 and 2017.    Quick-witted dancer Qiao (Zhao Tao) fires a gun to protect her mobster boyfriend, Bin (Fan Liao) during a fight. Upon release from prison five years later, she sets out to find him, setting off a years-long journey through a shadowy world of corruption, double crosses and turf wars, which all serves as a metaphorical record of 21st century China and its warp-speed transformations.   Surprisingly funny at times, with burst of absurd slapstick and screwball humor, Ash is Purest White is a unique, insightful, gorgeously-filmed look at how crime reveals the reality of society, and how abstract forces shape individual lives. (Dir. by Zhangke Jia, 2018, China/France/Japan, in Chinese/Mandarin with English subtitles, 136 mins., Not Rated)
