Judy Holliday won the 1950 Best Actress Academy Award (beating out Bette Davis in All About Eve and Gloria Swanson in Sunset Boulevard) for her brilliantly funny performance as a wised-up “dumb blonde” in the terrific comedy classic, Born Yesterday. Directed by George Cukor, from a deliciously witty screenplay adapted from Garson Kanin’s long-running Broadway hit, Born Yesterday follows Billie Dawn (Holliday, reprising her role from Broadway), the floozie fiancée of junk-dealer millionaire Harry Brock (Broderick Crawford), who is trying to make a good impression among the Washington, D.C. politicos he’s hoping to influence. To ensure that Billie gets properly “culture-fied,” Harry hires handsome D.C. journalist Paul Verrall (William Holden) to give the seemingly dim-witted blonde a crash course in politics, history, literature, and – you guessed it – true love. But Billie’s not nearly as dumb as she seems, of course, and before long she’s graduated from pawn to queen on the corrupt Harry’s political chessboard. Nominated for five Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director, with Holliday taking home the gold for her memorably hilarious and poignant performance, Born Yesterday is one of the great American screen comedies of the 1950s. (Dir. by George Cukor, 1950, USA, 102 mins., Not Rated)
