All the hot razzle dazzle of the Kander and Ebb/Bob Fosse stage musical is captured in this electrifying 2002 film version that garnered six Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Supporting Actress (Catherine Zeta-Jones). At a time when crimes of passion result in celebrity headlines, 1920’s Windy City housewife and spotlight-seeker Roxie Hart (Renée Zellweger) meets fellow accused murderess and nightclub sensation Velma Kelly (Zeta-Jones) in the slammer on Chicago’s infamous Murderess Row, with both of them being represent by Billy Flynn (Richard Gere), the town’s slickest lawyer with a talent for turning notorious defendants into local legends. But in Chicago, there’s only room for one legend at a time, so the battle is on! Also starring Queen Latifah, John C. Reilly and Dominic West. (Dir. by Rob Marshall, 2002, USA, 113 mins., Rated PG-13)
