Celebrate an early Father’s Day with Spencer Tracy and Elizabeth Taylor in the 1950 comedy classic, Father of the Bride!
“I would like to say a few words about weddings,” a weary man says from the middle of a muddle of rice and scattered bottles. What follows is a warm, witty look at what it means to be Father of the Bride. Spencer Tracy is the father and Elizabeth Taylor the bride in this lively Vincente Minnelli-directed comedy classic, nominated for three Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Actor and Best Screenplay. Attorney Stanley T. Banks (Tracy, who received the fourth of his nine Best Actor Oscar nominations) finds himself unprepared when his daughter, Kay (Taylor), announces her engagement to Buckley Dunstan (Don Taylor), while wife Ellie (Joan Bennett) and son Tommy (Russ Tamblyn) burst with excitement over Kay’s wedding. But for Stanley, gaining a “son” offers no consolation for the loss of his baby girl, who’s all grown up now with a life of her own. Maybe everything will work out – that is, if Stanley can accept Buckley and survive the chaotic wedding. And who’s paying for that? Well, naturally, the Father of the Bride. Here comes the bride, there goes dad’s wallet – and everyone’s heart. (Dir. by Vincente Minnelli, 1950, USA, 92 mins., Not Rated)
