Beasts meet Booze in the cracked monster comedy Grabbers, a highly entertaining (and highly soused) homage to the classic creature features of yesteryear. Something sinister has come to the shores of Erin Island, unbeknownst to the quaint population of this sleepy fishing village resting somewhere off Ireland’s coast. First, some fishermen go missing. Then, there’s that rash of mutilated whale carcasses suddenly washing up on the beach. Something is clearly wrong on Erin Island, and surely there must be a logical explanation … or could it just be an invasion of bloodsucking monsters from outer space? When things start to take a turn for the worse, it’s up to two mismatched cops – an irresponsible alcoholic and his new partner, a by-the-book policewoman from the mainland – to protect the townsfolk from having their heads popped by the giant, tentacled, blood-slurping aliens that have decided to make Erin Island their new home and use the locals as their unwilling happy meals. Luckily, they discover a powerful weapon against their slimy foes, and that weapon is booze. If they want to survive the creatures’ onslaught, everyone is going to have to hit the pub and get very, very drunk! Fun and frightening in equal measure, Grabbers is a madcap monster movie with a twist, one that affectionately tips its hat to everything that ever fell from the sky or crawled out of the sea onto a movie screen. And don’t forget to have a drink when you see this … it could save your life! (Dir. by Jon Wright, 2012, UK, 94 mins., Not Rated, IFC Midnight) Digital
