“Jubilant! Hairspray is a fizzy and delirious high-camp message-movie-musical that may just turn out to be the happiest movie of the summer.” – Owen Gleiberman, Entertainment Weekly

Hairspray, the 2007 movie musical with the big heart and even bigger hair, comes dancing onto the big screen with an unstoppable blast of pure, unadulterated fun. Based on the hit 2002 Broadway musical, which was itself based on John Waters’ hilarious 1988 cult comedy, Hairspray is that rare movie that captures the bubbly excitement of a live musical while also delivering the cinematic goods. Baltimore, 1962. Tracy Turnblad (Nicky Blonsky), a “hair-hopping” teenager with all the right moves, is obsessed with The Corny Collins Show, a locally-produced TV dance show featuring Baltimore teens (dubbed “The Nicest Kids in Town”), demonstrating the latest kooky dance crazes like “The Mashed Potato” and “The Madison.” The plus-sized Tracy may not fit in with the cool kids, but with the help of her best friend Penny Pingleton (Amanda Bynes), Tracy is determined to audition for the show and win a spot dancing on-air with heartthrob Link Larkin (Zac Efron), much to the dismay of her frumpy mother, Edna (John Travolta). Soon, she’s battling with teen dance queen Amber Von Tussle (Brittany Snow) and her evil mother Velma (Michelle Pfeiffer), and getting drawn into the civil-rights movement when she decides it’s not fair that the Corny Collins Show is for white kids only. Can Tracy win Link’s heart, integrate the show, and prove that talent comes in all shapes and sizes … all without denting her ‘do? Can Chubby Checker do The Twist? Co-starring Queen Latifah, James Marsden, Elijah Kelly, Christopher Walken, Allison Janney and Jerry Stiller, featuring a cameo by John Waters himself, and driven by an avalanche of catchy tunes by Marc Shaiman, Hairspray is a real blast! (Dir. by Adam Shankman, 2007, USA, 117 mins., Rated PG)
