Sometimes the scariest secrets just run in the family. That’s what Annie (Toni Collette) finds out after her mother passes away – and her presence continues to linger, focusing eerily on Annie’s young daughter, Charlie (Milly Shapiro). Beset by supernatural unease, Annie and her family begin to unravel cryptic and increasingly terrifying truths about their ancestry, and the more they discover, the more they find themselves trying to outrun the sinister fate they seem to have inherited.   Toni Collette delivers an electrifying performance in this hair-raising debut from writer/director Ari Aster that offers up a shattering portrait of familial tragedy and heritage gone to hell, while brilliantly juggling other-worldly chills, walloping shocks and the more down-to-earth horrors of parenting.  Also starring Gabriel Byrne, Ann Dowd and Alex Wolff.
