I Am Divine

I Am Divine tells the fabulous true story of Divine, aka Harris Glenn Milstead, from his humble beginnings as an overweight, bullied Baltimore youth to internationally recognized drag superstar through his trashy collaborations with filmmaker John Waters. Spitting in the face of the status quos of body image, gender identity, sexuality, and preconceived notions of beauty, Divine was the ultimate outsider turned underground royalty. With a completely committed in-your-face style, he blurred the line between performer and personality, and in the process revolutionized pop culture. As the outrageous star of such cult classics as Pink Flamingos and Female Trouble, the larger-than-life performer helped define the underground film movement of the ‘70s and changed the way the world looked at drag. Incorporating film clips and interviews with figures such as John Waters, Tab Hunter, Mink Stole and Ricki Lake, this documentary-in-high-heels struts the long and wild road that led Divine from persecution to global adoration. But, while maintaining his outrageous persona, Divine also craved respect as a legitimate actor. Long after his tragic death, the one-and-only Divine continues to shock, delight, and influence generations of performers and moviegoers.
