This March, The Loft Cinema proudly presents our second Agnès Varda retrospective, The Films of Agnès Varda Part Deux, celebrating the release of the Oscar-winning filmmaker’s final work, Varda by Agnès, which opens for a regular engagement on Friday, March 6!

The sun-drenched idyll of Le Bonheur, Varda’s third feature, flowers into a chillier tale of infidelity. A carpenter named François (Jean-Claude Drouot) lives in Edenic bliss with his picture-perfect wife and children (Drouot’s real-life family), but when he strikes up an acquaintance with a charming postal clerk (Marie-France Boyer), he begins to test the limits of his domestic stability.

“Stings with whiplash irony … Varda fills her frames with riots of color and nature and choreographs physical passion with unabashed but formally controlled delight.” – Richard Brody, New Yorker

As he does, Le Bonheur’s impressionist tableaux, lusciously photographed by Claude Beausoleil and Jean Rabier, takes on razor-sharp edges, all while a chasm widens between François’s self-involvement and its casualties. This barbed masterpiece—a complement to the burgeoning feminist movement in the mid-’60s—exemplifies Varda at her boldest. (Dir. by Agnès Varda, 1965, France, in French with subtitles, 80 mins., Not Rated)

Preceded by the short film: Salut les Cubains.  A photo montage of Cubans filmed by Agnès Varda during her visit to Cuba in 1963, exploring Cuban society and culture post-revolution. (Dir. by Agnès Varda, 1964, France/Cuba, in French with English subtitles, 30 mins., Not Rated)
