A hilariously odd mash-up of a buddy-comedy and road movie with a sci-fi twist, Mandibles is a wild, surreal film about friendship, dreaming big, and crashing down to Earth.
“Short, sweet and genuinely funny, if also insane … Dupieux stands so far out in left field that he’s become a genre unto himself.” – Jordan Mintzer, Hollywood Reporter
Like a French cross between Dumb and Dumber and The Big Lebowski, albeit with an enhanced absurdist edge that could only come from the twisted mind of writer/director Quentin Dupieux (Deerskin, Rubber), Mandibles centers around the relationship between Manu (Grégoire Ludig) and Jean-Gab (David Marsais). After stealing a beat-up Mercedes in order to deliver a mysterious briefcase to an unknown recipient, the friends find more than they bargained for when they hear a strange noise coming from the trunk and decide to check it out. Finding a giant fly trapped inside, Manu and Jean-Gab decide to train it in the hope of making a ton of cash. Needless to say, the duo’s hair-brained scheme doesn’t go the way they’d planned, and uproarious, unpredictable hijinks ensue. (Dir. by Quentin Dupieux, 2020, Belgium/France, in French with English subtitles, 77 mins., Not Rated)
