The latest drama from celebrated director Todd Haynes (Carol, Far from Heaven) is an intimate and engrossing exploration of truth, storytelling, and human connection, boasting a trio of bravura performances by Julianne Moore, Natalie Portman, and Charles Melton. Elizabeth Berry (Portman), a popular Hollywood actress, has arrived in the tight-knit community of Camden, Maine to spend time with Gracie Atherton-Yu (Moore), whom she’ll be playing in a film. Gracie is a modest housewife and former tabloid queen whose shocking affair with Joe (Melton), an underage schoolboy, made headlines 20 years earlier. The once-illicit lovers are married now, and parents of twins about to graduate from high school, but the legacy of the scandal still stirs up a tangled web of emotions. As Elizabeth insinuates herself into their lives, the family dynamic begins to unravel under the pressure of the outside gaze. Joe, never having processed what happened in his youth, starts to confront the reality of life as an empty-nester at thirty-six. And as Elizabeth and Gracie study each other, the similarities and differences between the two women ebb and flow while family secrets and uncomfortable truths reveal themselves in most surprising ways.
