PLUS, sing-a-long with rockin’ Cher music videos before the movie – it’s “Cher-aoke!”
Cher is a flamboyant, free-spirited single mother trying her best to raise two daughters amidst the turmoil of the 1960s in the heartfelt comedy/drama, Mermaids!
“A very likable coming-of-age comedy … Cher, Ryder and Ricci make this oddball family memorable.” – David Ansen, Newsweek
It’s only 1963, but for Rachel Flax – that’s “Mrs. Flax,” to you – the sexual revolution is already well underway. Uninhibited and over-the-top, Rachel (Cher in sterling sexy/sassy/sensitive form) is a fun-loving vagabond who breezes from town to town (and man to man), leaving a trail of broken hearts in her wake and dragging her two daughters, Charlotte and Katie, along for the ride. 15-year-old Charlotte (Winona Ryder), continually embarrassed by her ostentatious mother, wants to be the world’s greatest Catholic (in addition to being Jewish), with an eye on a future career as a nun; 9-year-old Katie (Christina Ricci) would be satisfied with becoming the world’s champion swimmer. When the trio settles in a small New England town, in a cozy cottage not far from a convent, Charlotte thinks she’s got it made. But while Rachel takes up with an adoring, lonely salesman named Lou (Bob Hoskins), Charlotte falls hard for a hunky groundskeeper named Joe (Michael Schoeffling, aka “Jake Ryan” from Sixteen Candles!), and she’s both terrified and intrigued by these new feelings of romance that threaten to distract her from her spiritual calling. And of course, it remains to be seen if love can possibly tame Mrs. Flax’s ever-restless nature, because, well, a mermaid’s gotta swim! (Dir. by Richard Benjamin, 1990, USA, 110 mins., Rated PG-13)
