Howard Lyman is a passionate champion of individual health, the welfare of all animals, and the sustainability of the planet. His life is dedicated to educating people about how those issues are linked and about how eating the right food — whole, plant-based food — can have a critical, positive effect in those areas.

“Howard Lyman is fighting not only for our health but for our nation’s sanity as well. He challenges not only mad cows, but a mad system.” — Studs Terkel

A former fourth-generation Montana cattle rancher turned vegan, Lyman is a world-renowned public speaker, author, and animal advocate. He understands that “we must ask ourselves as a culture … whether we want to embrace the change that must come, or resist it.” And, he says, we must ask ourselves this fundamental question: “Are we so attached to the dietary fallacies with which we were raised, so afraid to counter the arbitrary laws of eating taught to us in childhood by our misinformed parents, that we cannot alter the course they set us on, even if it leads to our own ruin?” Making responsible food choices, he says, makes him feel a “part of a movement that is not so much political as it is the march of the human heart.”
Author of Mad Cowboy: Plain Truth from the Cattle Rancher Who Won’t Eat Meat and No More Bull! The Mad Cowboy Targets America’s Worst Enemy: Our Diet, Lyman is subject of the documentary films Mad Cowboy and Peaceable Kingdom: The Journey Home. He also is founder of Voice for a Viable Future, a educational nonprofit organization that promotes organic family farming, biodiversity, vegetarianism, environmentally friendly practices, and enlightened trade.
