After being mysteriously kidnapped and imprisoned with no human contact for fifteen years, Oh Dae-Su (Choi Min-sik) is suddenly released without any explanation, but is given money, a cellphone and expensive clothes. In a twisted game of cat and mouse, he has only five days to retrace his past, track down his captor, and exact his revenge. But he soon discovers that his kidnapper has a greater plan for him, sending him down a twisted path he never could have imagined. Winner of the 2003 Cannes Grand Prix award, Park Chan-wook’s masterful, wildly violent revenge thriller, part of the director’s thematically-linked “Vengeance Trilogy” (which also includes 2002’s Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance and 2005’s Lady Vengeance), remains a uniquely visceral cult classic that has served as inspiration for countless auteurs over the past two decades. (Dir. by Park Chan-wook, 2003, South Korea, in Korean with English subtitles, 119 mins., Rated R)
