In this Oscar-winning, razzmatazz Technicolor musical starring Gene Kelly and Frank Sinatra, and co-directed by Kelly and Stanley Donen (Singin’ in the Rain), three fun-loving sailors – Gabey (Kelly), Chip (Sinatra) and Ozzie (Jules Munshin) – are set loose in New York City on a 24-hour leave. On a subway, Gabey sees a poster of “Miss Turnstiles of the Month” – a woman named Ivy Smith (Vera-Ellen). Thinking she’s a high society girl, the trio spends the day looking for her. Along the way, they run in to a cab driver, Hilde (Betty Garrett), who is attracted to Chip, and a gorgeous anthropologist named Claire (Ann Miller). Soon, they’re all painting the town with singing, dancing and romancing! Featuring a bevy of great tunes, including “New York, New York,” “Come Up to My Place” and “You Count on Me,” and winner of an Academy Award for Best Musical Score, the ebullient On the Town changed the landscape of movie musicals with its colorful location shooting on the streets of New York. The Bronx is up and the Battery’s down, but no one can be down after going On the Town! (Dir. by Stanley Donen & Gene Kelly, 1949, USA, 98 mins., Not Rated)
