This December, The Loft Cinema invites viewers to visit the weird and wonderful world of Guillermo del Toro with four of his classics on the big screen, as well as his new film, The Shape of Water!
It’s giant robots vs. monstrous sea creatures in Guillermo del Toro’s colossal, heavy-metal sci-fi/action extravaganza that transforms the impending apocalypse into a roller coaster of exuberant fun!
“Pacific Rim is awesome, scary, weird, exciting, exuberant, and ridiculous – basically everything you want from a sci-fi action movie.” – Cammila Collar, TV Guide’s Movie Guide
A big budget homage to the Japanese monster movies of the ’50s and ‘60s, Pacific Rim unleashes legions of destructive creatures, known as Kaiju, rising from the sea to start a war that could take millions of lives and consume humanity’s resources for years on end. To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon has been created: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge. But even the Jaegers are proving nearly defenseless in the face of the relentless Kaiju. On the verge of defeat, humankind has no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes – a washed-up former pilot (Charlie Hunnam) and an untested trainee (Rinko Kikuchi) – who are teamed up to drive a legendary, but seemingly obsolete, Jaeger from the past. Together, they stand as the world’s last hope against the mounting monster apocalypse. (Dir. by Guillermo del Toro, 2013, USA, in English/Japanese/Cantonese/Chinese with English subtitles, 131 mins., Rated PG-13)
