Photograph, the wistful and funny new film from writer/director Ritesh Batra (The Lunchbox), tells the tale of a struggling Mumbai street photographer who, pressured to marry by his grandmother, convinces a shy stranger to pose as his fiancée during a family visit.
“Lovely … a throwback to the old-fashioned big screen romances of yore.”- Fionnuala Halligan, Screen International
Rafi (Nawazuddin Siddiqui) comes to Mumbai from a small village to earn money to pay off an old family debt. Working as a street photographer, he shares one small room with friends and sends almost everything he makes to his grandmother, Dadi (Farrukh Jaffar), in the hope she will be able to buy back her ancestral home. To satisfy the elderly woman’s desire, he sends her a photo of the strange woman he has met, claiming that the girl, Miloni (Sanya Malhotra), is his fiancée. When his grandmother insists on a meeting, things get complicated. (Dir. by Ritesh Batra, 2019, India/Germany/USA, in Hindi/Gujarati/English with English subtitles, 110 mins., Rated PG-13)
