Piranha II: The Spawning

Break out the canned tuna and top it with cheese, because June is MARINE MONSTER BEACH PARTY month at Monday Mondays, featuring a fabulously fishy collection of aquatic creatures just dying to get you in the water!

“The terror is back … but this time it flies!” King of the World James Cameron’s much-maligned directorial debut unleashes fearsome flying fish with fangs on a tropical island resort, and the unsuspecting vacationers must decide whether to arm themselves with fishing poles or fly swatters in this gory and goofy Italian/American co-production which in no way indicates its director was about to give the world The Terminator!

“Effectively gruesome and unashamedly goofy.”- Moss Films

In the notoriously troubled quasi-sequel Piranha II: The Spawning (the young Cameron was fired by the Italian producers after two weeks of shooting, and the film was actually completed by Italian schlock director Ovidio Assonitis, the genius behind the horror flicks Tentacles and Madhouse), Club Elysium, a summer vacation hot spot, becomes a feeding ground of fear when a secret military experiment is unleashed on the populace. It seems that flesh-eating piranha have been crossbred with various other species, including flying fish, to create an unstoppable killing organism. Nestled below the ocean depths within a wrecked naval supply ship, the eggs hatch and the mutant fish begin their hunt for fresh food. A diving instructor, her estranged husband and a man who worked on the secret project (future Aliens-star Lance Henriksen) attempt to stop the ravenous, airborne pack of piranha before the peaceful resort becomes a blood beach! Whatever one thinks about the unholy mess that IS Piranha II: The Spawning, any viewer who can’t find a treasure trove of laughs while watching flying piranha on bouncy strings attacking hordes of badly dubbed Italian extras and screaming topless women is clearly a lost cause. (Dir. by James Cameron, 1982, USA/Italy, 84 mins., Rated R)
