See the classic 1948 John Wayne western, Red River, screened outdoors at the historic Empire Ranch, where much of the film was shot (in addition to other Southern Arizona locations)!
“A landmark film that brought a new psychological complexity to the genre and gave John Wayne the first truly challenging role of his career. “– Philip French, Guardian
Red River, director Howard Hawks’ masterpiece starring John Wayne and Montgomery Clift, is one of the greatest Westerns ever made, a rowdy, whip-smart saga of obsession and rivalry between a man and his adopted son amid an epic struggle for survival in the Old West. Filmed on location in Southern Arizona, Red River features John Wayne in one of his greatest roles – an embittered, tyrannical Texas rancher whose tensions with his independent-minded adopted son, played by Montgomery Clift (in his breakthrough performance), reach the boiling point during a grueling cattle drive to Missouri. The film is based on a novel that dramatizes the real-life late nineteenth-century expeditions along the Chisholm Trail, but director Howard Hawkes is less interested in historical accuracy than in tweaking codes of masculinity that propel the myths of the American West. The legendarily macho Wayne and the neurotic, boyish Clift make for an improbably perfect pair, held aloft by a quick-witted, complex screenplay and Hawks’ expert direction.
