“Emotionally satisfying, with a great score by Hilario Duran … The Cuban is driven by music and how it affects our minds and our lives.” – Patrick O’Heffernan, Indie Pulse
Oscar-winner Louis Gossett Jr. (An Office and a Gentleman) stars in this poignant, music-filled drama as Luis, an elderly Cuban musician with dementia who is brought out of his shell by his care worker, a disillusioned young pre-med student named Mina (Ana Golja). Mina’s attempts to reach Louis are futile until a poster of musician Benny More inspires her to hum a jazz tune that, to her surprise, ignites a spark inside him. As each day passes, the music awakens Luis more and more until the colorful world of his past becomes vibrant and real again. An unexpected friendship begins, and through a shared loved of music, both their lives are changed. Co-starring Oscar-nominee Shohreh Aghdashloo (House of Sand and Fog), and featuring the music of Grammy nominated, Afro-Cuban jazz virtuoso Hilario Duran, The Cuban, shot in Canada and Havana, Cuba, is a powerful and heart-warming story of love, friendship and the power of music.
