Colin Farrell, Rachel Weisz and John C. Reilly star in this deliciously dark comedy from Oscar-nominated filmmaker Yorgos Lanthimos, about a curious hotel where the residents are charged with finding a new mate within 45 days – under penalty of being turned into an animal should they fail. What if the world demanded that people live as couples? Those unable to couple on their own are sent to a seaside hotel where they are free to mingle and flirt with their kind, provided that they follow the very strict rules designed to keep them focused on a future of cohabitation. Those who can’t connect with a mate are turned into an animal of their choosing and released into the wild.  This is the world of The Lobster. Colin Farrell plays the recently-divorced David, who arrives at the hotel with his brother, now a dog. In the event of failure, David has chosen to become a lobster, because they live so long. But when his earnest attempts to find a mate go bizarrely awry, he plots a course to break out into the woods, in search of what lies behind these societal constructs. Hilarious, strange and endlessly thought-provoking, with plenty to say about the illusory nature of romance and the thin veneer of civilization, this wildly imaginative, absurdist sci-fi tale keeps ruminating about the nature of true connection until the very last frame. An A24 release. (Dir. by Yorgos Lanthimos, 2015, Ireland/UK/Greece/France/Netherlands, in English and French with subtitles, 119 mins., Rated R)
