The Nutcracker

Celebrate the holidays with the world-renowned Mariinsky Theatre’s performance of Tchaikovsky’s beloved classic on the big screen in spectacular 3D and gorgeous 2D. This sumptuous traditional production was filmed at the historic Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg, Russia where the original Nutcracker was first performed over 120 years ago. Under the leadership of the Mariinsky’s Artistic Director and renowned conductor, Valery Gergiev, the Mariinsky Theatre was the first ballet company in the world to embrace 3D technology (with the successful release of Giselle in 3D). The Nutcracker is their second 3D project, which has been expertly filmed to demonstrate how this technology illustrates not only the strength and agility of the dancers, but also the masterful staging and choreography of the production. The result leaves the audience feeling as if they are witnessing the unfolding story on stage with the characters. The ballet opens with a Christmas Eve party and a young girl, Clara, being given a nutcracker doll by her godfather, Drosselmeyer. Later in the evening when Clara sleeps, she finds herself in the midst of the Nutcracker’s battle against the Mouse King and his army of mice. Coming to her Nutcracker’s aid, he is transformed into a Prince and journeys with Clara to the spectacular Kingdom of Sweets where the Sugar Plum Fairy holds a celebration in their honor.
