The Sorcerer and the White Snake

Martial arts superstar Jet Li (Hero, Romeo Must Die) stars in this action-packed romance/fantasy/adventure (based on an ancient Chinese legend) about a demon-hunting priest named Xu Xian who falls in love with a beautiful young woman named Susa. So far, so good, but what our intrepid hero doesn’t realize is that the lovely Susa is actually a demonic, thousand year old White Snake in disguise! Jet Li portrays a butt-kicking sorcerer who discovers the woman’s “snake-y secret” and prepares for the ultimate battle to save the man’s soul. Director Ching Siu-Tung pulls out all the grandiose, unhinged supernatural fantasy chop-sockey action stops that he previously unleashed in such cult epics as A Chinese Ghost Story, and before you can say “evil snake begone!,” we are treated to a non-stop avalanche of wild thrills and creature-fueled chills including angry bat demons, volcano monsters, sadistic chorus girls, kung fu-fighting monks, floods, fires and of course, that big bad White Snake! (Dir. by Ching Siu-Tung, 2012, Hong Kong, in Mandarin with subtitles, 100 mins., Rated PG-13, Magnet Releasing) Digital
