“An army of filmmakers led by the director, Peter Jackson, has made the trilogy’s central section a glorious, ringing testament to the power of motion pictures.” – Joe Morgenstern, Wall Street Journal
In the thrilling second part of the Tolkien trilogy, Frodo and the other members of the Fellowship continue on their sacred quest to destroy the One Ring – but on separate paths. After the breaking of the Fellowship, Frodo and Sam journey to the dark lands of Mordor to destroy the One Ring, with the creature Gollum (Andy Serkis) as their guide. Meanwhile, Aragorn (Viggo Mortensen), Legolas (Orlando Bloom, and Gimli (Joy Rhys-Davies) join in the defense of the people of Rohan, who are the first target in the eradication of the race of Men by the renegade wizard Saruman (Christopher Lee) and the dark lord Sauron, leading to a spectacular climactic battle at the fortress of Helm’s Deep. And of course, all roads lead to the cataclysmic events of the show-stopping finale, The Return of the King. (Dir. by Peter Jackson, 2002, New Zealand/USA, in English/Sindarin/Old English, 179 mins., Rated PG-13)
