PLUS, sing-a-long with rockin’ Cher music videos before the movie – it’s “Cher-aoke!”

Oscar-nominated director George Miller (Mad Max) adapts John Updike in this riotously raunchy comedy of bad manners, sexual frustration and supernatural shenanigans.

“Rowdy, vulgar, impolite and ultimately very seductive and entertaining, The Witches of Eastwick is filmmaking of a very high order – it’s also a great time at the movies.” –  – Dave Kehr, Chicago Tribune

In The Witches of Eastwick, the “witches” are three modern-day women yearning for Mr. Right in a quaint New England town full of Mr. Wrongs. Cher plays Alex, a tough-talking windowed sculptor who meets every Thursday night with her two best friends – harried mother Sukie (Michelle Pfeiffer), and dowdy music teacher Jane (Susan Sarandon) – to chug martinis, learn Chinese aphrodisiac cooking and lament the scarcity of eligible men. As they fantasize about the ideal male, their uptight community is turned upside down by the arrival of a devilish new stranger, Darrel Van Horn (Jack Nicholson, in the role he was clearly born to play), who has snapped up the town’s landmark property, the Lennox Mansion. Is his sudden appearance a coincidence, or have the women somehow conjured him into being? One by one, the three women fall under the spell of this wild-eyed mystery man, whose sexual advances are as crude as they are effective, and tinged with an almost supernatural allure. Shacking up with Darrel in his decadent mansion, the newly-liberated trio scandalizes the town with their uninhibited hedonism. But when Darrel’s true identity is revealed, the women tap into their own latent powers, and the stage is set for a malicious, magical war between the sexes that may send them all straight to hell! (Dir. by George Miller, 1987, USA, 118 mins, Rated R)
