Directed by Ridley Scott (Alien, Blade Runner) from an Oscar-winning screenplay by Callie Khouri, Thelma & Louise follows best friends Thelma (Davis) and Louise (Sarandon) on a weekend vacation away from their dead-end relationships that takes a tragic turn when they end up dispatching a would-be rapist in a roadside bar parking lot and then flee the scene, in the process becoming accidental outlaws on a desperate flight across the Southwest, with law enforcement, led by a determined detective (Harvey Keitel), in hot pursuit.   As the two women tear up the road and leave their old lives behind in the dust of their ’66 Thunderbird, they scatter a string of crimes in their wake, romance a sweet-talking hitchhiker (Brad Pitt, in his breakout role), and confront the patriarchy head on, leading to one of the most controversial, hotly-debated endings in movie history.  Filled with humor, high-octane action and stellar performances, Thelma & Louise is a truly subversive and entertaining reworking of the typically male-centered road movie genre. About this 2023 restoration: Thelma & Louise has been digitally restored from a new 4K 16-bit scan, supervised by director Ridley Scott using the original negative. The film has been restored by The Criterion Collection with participation from MGM Studios and Park Circus.
