This Must Be the Place

Stylishly directed by Italian filmmaker Paolo Sorrentino (Il Divo), This Must Be the Place is a thematically quirky, visually striking, unpredictable dramatic comedy featuring Academy Award-winner Sean Penn delivering one of his most unusual and fearless performances. Cheyenne (Penn) is a retired rock star who was big in the ‘80s but who has since slipped off the cultural radar. At the age of 50 he still dresses ‘Goth’ and lives in Dublin off his royalties, with his long-suffering wife (Frances McDormand). The death of his father, with whom he wasn’t on speaking terms, brings him back to New York, where he discovers that his father had a hidden obsession: to seek revenge for a humiliation he had suffered at the hand of an ex-Nazi war criminal now hiding in the U.S. Cheyenne decides to pick up the search where his father left off, and begins a colorful, incident-packed journey, at his own somewhat leisurely pace, across America. Co-starring Judd Hirsch, Harry Dean Stanton and David Byrne (as himself). Winner of 6 David di Donatello Awards (Italy’s Oscars). (Dir. by Paolo Sorrentino, 2012, Itay/France, 118 mins., Rated R, Weinstein Company) 35mm
