For millennia, Asgard has stood tall as the impenetrable home of the gods. Until now! Director Taika Waititi adds his own distinctly offbeat sensibility to the Marvel Universe in Thor: Ragnarok, as Thor (Chris Hemsworth), god of thunder and mighty Avenger, must team up with his diabolical brother, Loki (Tom Hiddleston), to return their deposed father, Odin (Anthony Hopkins), to the throne of Asgard.
“An enthusiastic, hilarious reboot of the idea of what a Marvel movie can actually be, resulting in an effervescent, delightfully self-aware ride that was the most fun I’ve had in a superhero movie in years.” – Bryan Bishop, The Verge
But when they get lost in the cosmos, their home is left defenseless before the marauding might of Hela (Cate Blanchett), goddess of the underworld, who seeks nothing less than the utter destruction of the Norse gods. Thor must battle his way past fellow Avenger, The Incredible Hulk (Mark Ruffalo), in an alien gladiator arena overseen by none other than Jeff Goldblum as the Grandmaster. And that’s the easy part! Taikia Waititi’s goofy, high-energy action flick, heavily-influenced by comic book legend Jack Kirby, is a rocking and rolling adventure across the universe, filled with fun and excitement, and with stakes that are higher than the Marvel Universe has ever seen before! (Dir. by Taika Waititi, 2017, USA/Australia, 130 mins., Rated PG-13)
