“The Janus Films icon – the black and white image, the lettering, the two faces on the seemingly ancient coin – meant that you were going to see something special, something new, something completely different from anything you’d ever seen before.” – Martin Scorsese
Few organizations have done as much as Janus Films to bring classic and contemporary international and arthouse films to U.S. audiences. A pillar of film restoration and presentation in America, Janus, along with The Criterion Collection (a subsidiary of Janus), is almost universally trusted by cinephiles as a leading voice in art cinema. Founded in 1956, Janus was the first theatrical distribution company dedicated to introducing international cinema to American moviegoers, and was almost single-handedly responsible for bringing some of the world’s greatest filmmakers to American renown, including Akira Kurosawa, Ingmar Bergman, Federico Fellini, Yasujirō Ozu, and countless others. Over the decades, Janus has also built a staggering library of unique, important and offbeat American films that have expanded the definition of “art film” to include works from George A. Romero, John Waters and many more. This April and May, The Loft Cinema proudly pays tribute to Janus Films with screenings of some its most iconic and unforgettable art films, with a special “Janus After Dark” selection of incredible late-night cult classics for those looking for a walk on the wild side!
