Eighty-year-old María Ángeles, (Almodóvar muse Carmen Maura, Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown) is a lifelong resident of Tangier, where she lives a full life, not anywhere close to slowing down, as part of a dwindling but vibrant community of Spanish expats. She has her routine, her friends, and her antiques-filled apartment. But María’s only daughter, Clara, in desperate need of money, is dead set on selling the apartment and its furnishings right out from under her mother – plus, she hopes María will move to Madrid and live out her golden years closer to family. Instead, the headstrong María devises a plan to stay in her beloved Tangier by opening an illicit sports bar in her apartment. In her quest to buy back all her belongings, she meets a cantankerous antiques dealer who unexpectedly reawakens feelings of love and sensuality she had long forgotten. In this funny and moving coming-of-old-age tale, bathed in a warm glow and gorgeously shot, Moroccan filmmaker Maryam Touzani (The Blue Caftan) gifts her star Carmen Marua with a character worthy of her iconic screen presence. (Dir. by Maryam Touzani, 2025, Morocco/Spain/France, in Spanish/Arabic with English subtitles, 116 mins., Not Rated)
