Pulled from the pages of Archie Comics, Josie and the Pussycats follows Josie (Rachael Leigh Cook),Val (Rosario Dawson), and Melody (Tara Reid), three small-town musicians with big dreams but little future. Then fate gives the Pussycats the chance of a lifetime when manager Wyatt (Alan Cumming) of MegaRecords signs them overnight to an awesome recording contract. Suddenly, Josie and the Pussycats are living life in the fast lane with sold out concerts, # 1 singles, and global stardom. But it’s not all limousines and private jets. The Pussycats soon discover they’re being played like pawns in an evil plot by the record label’s maniacal CEO Fiona (Parker Posey) to control the youth of America. A rocking satire of pop music commercialism and conformity with plenty of Snapple references, cat ears and girl power to spare, Josie and the Pussycats was unleashed on the world in 2001 to a mixed response, but has since amassed a loyal cult following tuned in to its over-the-top comedic swipes at trying to keep it real in a music industry that’s anything but. (Dir. by Deborah Kaplan & Harry Elfront, USA, 2001, 98 mins., Rated PG-13)
