A boatman delivering Hein back to a remote island asks, “Why would you come to this godforsaken place?” Hein replies, “This is my home.”
After 14 years, Hein is returning to the island village of his birth. Having fled a constricting, conservative community for a freer existence, Hein now wants to revisit his roots and a secret relationship from his youth.
The small community, however, isn’t sure this man is actually Hein, so they demand a trial to determine the truth. Hein is forced by the increasingly contentious hearings to face uncomfortable truths about the divide separating the man he wants to be from the Hein demanded by the villagers.
Directed by Kai Stänicke, 2026, Germany, in German with English subtitles, 122 minutes, NR
