Necronomicon: Book of the Dead

It’s multiple movies for the price of one during TWISTED ANTHOLOGIES MONTH at Mondo Mondays, featuring an avalanche of anthology horror flicks packed with more scary stories than inhumanly possible!

“From the master of terror comes a chilling tale of unspeakable evil.”    It’s time to get slimed with three scarifying stories from H.P. Lovecraft in this wild, pulsating, practical effects-a-palooza starring Re-Animator’s Jeffrey Combs as the legendary horror/fantasy writer.   As this anthology flick begins, Lovecraft (Combs, delivering a fantastic performance beneath some strangely “Bruce Campbell-esque” prosthetic makeup) discovers the infamous Book of the Dead, transcribes three of the stories within, and accidentally releases a rubbery monster into the world.    In “The Cold,” Mr. Madden (David Warner, Tron) is a scientist who cannot tolerate warm temperatures; when he falls in love with a beautiful woman who lives in the same boarding house, she learns the creepy secret behind his unusual condition.  “The Drowned” concerns Edward De La Pore (Bruce Payne, Howling VI: The Freaks), who inherits a dilapidated mansion from his uncle and discovers the horrifying truth about both his family and his new home.  And “Whispers” tells the tale of two policemen who encounter Mr. Benedict (Don Calfa, The Return of the Living Dead), who is a denizen of a terrifying subterranean community.  Also starring Richard Lynch (The Sword and the Sorcerer), Dennis Christopher (Fade to Black) and Belinda Bauer (Robocop 2), this creepy/kooky anthology flick from Re-Animator producer Brian Yuzna delivers the Lovecraft-ian thrills with plenty of gross monsters, slimy tentacles and bizarre hellscapes, (Dir. by Christophe Gans/Shusuke Kaneko/Brian Yuzna,, 1993, USA, 96 mins., Rated R)
