“Four Ghoulish Tales in One Modern Nightmare!” Brace yourself for some KILLER stories in this all-star, big-screen, super-sized spinoff from the creeptastic TV series, Tales from the Darkside, born from the clever and creepy minds of Stephen King (The Shining), Michael McDowell (writer of Beetlejuice), George A. Romero (Dawn of the Dead) and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (creator of Sherlock Holmes). To keep from being eaten by a modern-day witch (Debbie Harry), a young paperboy spins three twisted stories to distract her from popping him into the oven. In “Lot 249” (based on a story by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and written by Michael McDowell), a vengeful college student (Steve Buscemi) resuscitates an evil mummy to teach unsuspecting student bodies (Julianne Moore and Christian Slater) a lesson in bloody bandaged terror. Then, “Cat From Hell” (written by George A. Romero, based on a Stephen King story), is a furry black feline who cannot be killed…he may have nine lives, but those who cross his path, including a wealthy old man (William Hickey) and a sarcastic hitman (David Johansen), are not so lucky, leading to some gruesomely “cat-astrophic” consequences. Finally, in “Lover’s Vow,” a struggling artist (James Remar) meets a mysterious young woman (Rae Dawn Chong) who may be a murderous stone gargoyle come to life, which could be a real relationship deal-breaker. Fear comes in bite-sized pieces in this funny, frightening, and macabre terror collection featuring gore and surprises galore. (Dir. by John Harrison, 1990, USA, 93 mins., Rated R)
