Virginie Efira stars as Marie-Lou, who runs a nursing home near Paris and strives for more humane elder care. Her friendship with Mari (Tao Okamoto), a Japanese theatre director facing terminal cancer, deepens her commitment to residents’ dignity. Shot in Paris at an actual elder-care facility in the 15th arrondissement, the film is inspired by the non-fiction book You and I – The Illness Suddenly Get Worse, a collection of letters between philosopher Makiko Miyano and medical anthropologist Maho Isono. as the former was in her own battle with metastatic breast cancer.
Directed by Ryusuke Hamaguchi, 2026, Japan/France, in French and Japanese with English subtitles, 195 minutes, PG13
