Commemorate World AIDS Day (December 1) with a special screening of the powerful, Oscar-winning 1989 documentary COMMON THREADS: STORIES FROM THE QUILT, co-presented by SAAF (Southern Arizona AIDS Foundation).
Started in a San Francisco storefront by the NAMES Project in the summer of 1987, the AIDS Memorial Quilt had grown to include 8,288 handmade panels by 1988, each honoring a life lost. Filmmakers Rob Epstein and Jeffrey Friedman witnessed the quilt’s early days and then quickly moved to capture on film the personal stories woven into this historic monument, a powerful record of grief, resilience, and activism that won the 1989 Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature. Co-produced by Dolly Parton’s Sandollar Productions. (Dir. by Rob Epstein & Jeffrey Friedman, 1989, USA, 79 mins., Not Rated)
