“A pitch black, over-the-top comedy … clever, different and dementedly entertaining.” – Jeff Mennel, Hollywood Reporter
Meryl Streep and Goldie Hawn are going to stay young and beautiful … or die trying, in this crazed dark comedy from the director of Back to the Future! Eternal frenemies, Madeline Ashton (Streep) and Helen Sharp (Hawn) have always been rivals in success, love and appearance. Now, they’re in a demented battle to see who can keep the other one dead in Death Becomes Her! Novelist Helen Sharp was once engaged to successful plastic surgeon Ernest Menveille (Bruce Willis), until her former best friend/movie star Madeline Ashton wooed Ernest away with her glitzy celebrity lifestyle. Naturally, this kind of stress sent poor Helen straight into a nervous breakdown involving cats and cake frosting, and she wound up in a psychiatric hospital. Years later, she returns home to confront the now-married couple and exact her revenge, looking radiantly beautiful. Her ex-husband’s new wife wants to know her secret, and discovers that Helen has been taking a mysterious potion which grants eternal youth and beauty. Madeline quickly follows suit, but both women quickly discover that immortality comes at a very high price, leading to an insane battle royale involving gruesome special effects, hilarious one-liners and a general air of morbidity rare in a mainstream Hollywood comedy. If you’ve ever wanted to see Meryl Streep acting with her head on backwards, you must not miss Death Becomes Her! (Dir. by Robert Zemeckis, 1992, USA, 104 mins., Rated PG-13)
