Part of The Loft Cinema’s summer series, 1999! BEST. MOVIE. YEAR. EVER.
A cast of has-been actors are called upon to save the universe in this affectionate, hysterically funny homage to cult sci-fi shows like Star Trek and the phenomenon of fandom itself. For four years, the courageous crew of the NSEA Protector – Commander Peter Quincy Taggart (Tim Allen), Lt. Tawny Madison (Sigourney Weaver), and Dr. Lazarus (Alan Rickman) – set off on thrilling and often dangerous missions in space … and then their Star Trek-eque TV series was canceled! Now, 20 years later and thoroughly washed up, the once-popular actors keep their careers going thanks to store openings and fan conventions. That is until an actual alien race who took the transmissions of the long-running show as “historical documents” beam up the ragtag crew and ask their “heroes” to help save their home planet. Watch out, Mr. Red Shirt! Also starring Sam Rockwell, Tony Shalhoub and Justin Long, Galaxy Quest is a fun-filled comedy that boldly goes where no comedy has gone before! (Dir. by Dean Parisot, 1999, USA, 102 mins., Rated PG)
