Experience the greatest films from Hollywood’s Golden Age back on the big screen, every week at The Loft Cinema!

Hollywood legends Marilyn Monroe and Jane Russell are two showgirls looking for love on the high seas in this wildly entertaining musical/comedy extravaganza! Written by the incomparable Anita Loos, the first woman to become a staff writer in Hollywood, and based on her comic novel of the same name, Gentlemen Prefer Blondes follows the adventures of blonde bombshell Lorelei Lee (Monroe) and savvy brunette Dorothy Shaw (Russell), best friends and nightclub singers who wreak havoc on the male libido on a cruise liner to Paris, where unabashed gold-digger Lorelei plans to marry a square but wealthy heir. Together they navigate the shark-infested waters of the dating pool and try to dodge the private detective on board hoping to expose Lorelei’s true marriage motives. Along the way, the dynamic duo displays their flawless comic timing and unleash a series of delirious musical numbers, including Monroe’s iconic, pink-hued performance of “Diamonds are a Girl’s Best Friend,” and “Ain’t There Anyone Here for Love,” in which Russell cavorts with an entire male Olympic team.  Directed by Howard Hawks, this big-budget Technicolor musical is unique in his filmography for its rapt focus on female friendship and its playful lampooning of the “dominant” sex. (Dir. by Howard Hawks, 1953, USA, 91 mins., Not Rated)
