See a sneak preview of Going Santa Fe, a documentary-in-progress, plus a Q&A with filmmaker Anne Mulford!
Going Santa Fe unearths the untold queer history of Santa Fe, New Mexico through the director’s personal quest to know and understand her mother, who left behind a cultured East Coast life in 1964 to build a life with Claude James, a woman who owned Santa Fe’s most legendary bar on Canyon Road from the late 1950s-1975. “Claude’s” was both the city’s “Cheers” and its “Stonewall”. Everyone went there from artists, cowboys and performers in the Santa Fe Opera; to bankers, attorneys and the Governor himself. As a personal family mystery unfolds, a larger story emerges of Santa Fe as a sanctuary for homosexuals and anyone who was or felt othered. The film also draws a powerful parallel between the fear, secrecy, and discrimination fueled by homophobia in these earlier decades and the growing threats to civil rights facing so many today.
This is a community rental presented by Anne Mulford.
