Rumors about David’s retirement may be true, but he keeps rolling, and thus he brings us the 13th season of In the Americas. Not that he is superstitious or anything like that, but chances are he won’t leave the number of seasons stuck on such a tricky digit.

As they usually do in these events, David and Dan will tell us about their thrilling travels, which took them from Alaska to Brazil, with stops in a few hidden natural and cultural gems of the Americas.

We will screen two episodes, followed by a discussion with David and Dan, where they unveil the secrets of filming season 13 and, who knows, maybe something about a future 14th.

Episode 1 (Season 12): KETCHIKAN AND ALASKA’S PANHANDLE FORESTS AND SEA
Alaska’s Panhandle preserves vast tracts of the planet’s dwindling temperate rainforests. Ketchikan, the largest town in the panhandle, lies at the edge of these forests, accessible only by boat or airplane. It perseveres in the shadows of former robust salmon fisheries, but now attracts tourists, undeterred by incessant rains, lured by marine life, exotic forests, and the spectacular national monument known as Misty Fjords.

Episode 2 (Season 13): THE ACHUAR: PROTECTORS OF ECUADOR’S RAINFOREST
Ecuador’s population is concentrated on the Altiplano, a high plain in the western part of the country reaching well over 10,000 feet in elevation. To the east of the Altiplano lie the vast, wet, and tropical lowlands of the Amazon basin.  Much of the Ecuadorian Amazon is covered with dense tropical rainforest and inhabited by peoples, some of whom were unknown to outsiders until recent decades. Among these are the Achuar, whose homelands lie in Ecuador and Peru. They are river and forest people.  One Achuar group has undertaken a conservation program that could be a model for rainforest peoples everywhere.

This is a community rental presented by The Southwest Center at the University of Arizona.
