The Loft Film Fest is honored to present Joan Tewkesbury with the inaugural Larry McMurtry Screenwriting award, which will be presented over zoom by Larry’s writing and producing partner, Diana Ossana.

The Larry McMurtry Screenwriting award, created with Larry’s blessing, will be presented by his writing and producing partner, Diana Ossana, to honor the work of a deserving member of the greater film creative community from around the world.

Screenwriting derived from Larry’s and Diana’s work has received 34 Oscar nominations and 13 Oscars. During Larry’s thirty-five-year residency in Tucson, he and Diana were devoted patrons of The Loft Cinema.

The Loft Film Fest is grateful for the opportunity to celebrate Larry, who The Loft Cinema had the privilege to know and welcome as a friend over many years, including a private screening of Brokeback Mountain, the first time Larry and Diana saw their Oscar-winning film on the big screen!

When director Robert Altman asked Joan if she knew anything about Nashville – she said she didn’t. So she moved there in 1973 to observe the city, its culture and its people, and the result was the award-winning screenplay for Nashville.

In addition to her screenplays, Joan is a director of film and television, a novelist, producer, choreographer and actress (not to mention an early stint as a dancer), and, most recently, a writing teacher.

Joan’s collaborations with Altman include McCabe and Mrs. Miller and Thieves Like Us.

The Larry McMurtry Screenwriting award will be presented to Joan Tewkesbury by Diana Ossana before the screening of NASHVILLE.

NASHVILLE
This cornerstone of 1970s American moviemaking from Robert Altman is a panoramic view of the country’s political and cultural landscapes, set in the nation’s music capital. Nashville weaves the stories of twenty-four characters—from country star to wannabe to reporter to waitress—into a cinematic tapestry that is equal parts comedy, tragedy, and musical.
