“A confounding masterpiece … sustains a level of intensity few films ever reach. You’re in for a wild ride.” – Ben Sachs, Chicago Reader
Banned upon its original release in 1981, Andrzej Żuławski’s crazed, stunningly choreographed nightmare of a marriage unraveling is an experience unlike any other. Professional spy Mark (Sam Neill) returns to his West Berlin home to find his wife Anna (Isabelle Adjani) insistent on a divorce. As Anna’s frenzied behavior becomes ever more alarming, Mark discovers a truth far more sinister than his wildest suspicions, and he’s soon thrust into a quest to save his marriage involving homicidal jealousy, sinister doppelgangers, and a slimy tentacled creature designed by Oscar-winning special effects artist Carolos Rimbaldi (E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial). With its pulsating score, visceral imagery, and some of the most haunting performances ever captured on screen (Adjani’s astonishingly intense performance earned her Best Actress at Cannes and also made her contemplate leaving acting behind for good), Possession is a shattering portrait of dissolving love (conceived by director Żuławski after the breakup of his own marriage), and pure cinematic delirium at its most intoxicating. (Dir. by Andrzej Żuławsk, 1981, France/West Germany, in English/French/German with English subtitles, 124 mins,.Rated R)
