Documentarian Sam Pollard chronicles the iconic Lorraine Motel in Memphis, where Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. was assassinated, and its extraordinary owners, Walter and Loree Bailey.
The Lorraine is so much more than the balcony of Room 306. While The Lorraine is a Memphis landmark best known as the place Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated in 1968, the reason that Dr. King and so many other Black luminaries stayed there to begin with is because of the safe haven that Walter and Loree Bailey had built up over two decades of segregation in the South. The Lorriane was a rare Black-owned hotel that became a bustling hub of activity, especially when the legendary Stax Records was right down the street.
