Recent divorcée Roslyn Taber (Marilyn Monroe), fragile and searching for connection, arrives in Reno looking for a quickie divorce, and becomes entwined in the lives of three lonely, washed-up men in director John Huston’s powerful classic, The Misfits. Emotionally adrift in the Nevada desert, Roslyn Taber (Monroe) is befriended by her landlady Isabelle Steers (Thelma Ritter) and taken in by the last of the cowboys: weathered wrangler Gaylord Langland (Clark Gable) and ex-flyboy Guido (Eli Wallach), as punchy rodeo rider Perce Howland (Montgomery Clift) comes along for the ride – but when a hunt for wild horses looms on the horizon, this makeshift family’s bonds begin to break. Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Arthur Miller’s first film script – beautifully melancholy and emotionally devastating – was tailored for his then-wife Monroe, in what turned out to be her (as well as Gable’s) cinematic swan song, as well as one of her greatest, most heartbreaking performances. (Dir. by John Huston, 1961, USA, 125 mins., Not Rated)
